[DAYLONG] Transforming the Judgmental Mind
Donald Rothberg
September 26, 2023
Judgments of a reactive and compulsive nature are very strong in most of our lives. They can distort our perceptions, make relationships with others difficult and undermine our work.In this daylong, we will examine what judgments are and how to work with them, using mindfulness, “heart” practices like lovingkindness and compassion, and inquiry. These will help us transform the energy of judgments—preserving the intelligence and discernment often found in judgments, while working through the destructive and compulsive aspects of judgments. We will also explore how we internalize the judgments of our society in a number of ways, particularly related to race, gender, sexual orientation, appearance, age, etc. Attendees will have the option of follow-up sessions to continue and deepen the learning. The daylong will include silent and guided formal meditation, walking meditation outside, several short talks and discussion, and a wonderful lunch offered by the Southern Dharma staff.
This event will be offered in person at Southern Dharma (1661 West Rd Hot Springs) on Tuesday, September 26th. Check-in will be from 8:30am-9am. Program will conclude at 5pm and includes lunch. Your registration fee is offered on a sliding scale ($25 – $75); kindly offer to pay at the highest amount that you are able. Please keep in mind that program fees do not include compensation for the teacher. You will be invited to offer donations to both the teacher and the Center at the end of the retreat.
We will not be requiring or administering Covid-19 tests for this program, but please bring mindfulness to your activity in the days leading up to the retreat out of consideration for our staff, teachers and participants. Avoiding higher risk situations and making use of masks whenever possible will minimize the likelihood of transmitting viruses to others while on site. We strongly encourage folks to stay home if they are symptomatic of any communicable illness.
