Scholarship Information

Need-Based Scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of friends and donors, Southern Dharma offers work-exchange scholarships to people unable to attend retreats without financial assistance. Applicants may request consideration for one work-exchange scholarship per calendar year.

Work-Exchange Scholarship recipients commit to working two hours daily during retreats in exchange for reduced registration fees.

To request consideration for a Work-Exchange Scholarship, please register for the retreat of your choice through our website and select the scholarship option in the drop-down payment area of the registration form. After you register, we will email you a scholarship application form for completion and return.

Southern Dharma will reserve space in the retreat of your choice for a period of one week pending completion and return of your scholarship application. We will notify you of the amount of your scholarship award by email after we review your application. At the time of notification, you will be given the opportunity to accept or decline the award offer.

Fellowships for Educators

Thanks to the generosity of the Hemera Foundation, Southern Dharma is pleased to offer registration funding support to qualifying educators.

Hemera's Contemplative Fellowships for Educators (CFE) program provides retreat fellowship support to people who work full-time (in any capacity) in pre-K or K-12 education. Individuals enrolled in a Master's degree program in Education are also eligible for funding consideration.

Fellowship awards are based upon the availability of funding at any particular time. Applicants may be awarded only one Hemera fellowship each year.

People who have never attended a retreat longer than a weekend may be awarded full registration funding. Applicants with prior retreat experience (people who have previously attended a meditation retreat longer than a weekend) may be awarded 50% registration funding plus additional funding on the basis of financial need.

Fellowship awards may be applied to retreat registration fees, but not to teacher dana, travel expenses, or voluntary contributions to the retreat center.

Hemera's Contemplative Fellowships for Health Care Professionals (CFHP) program provides retreat fellowship support to people employed full-time in health care who work primarily with patients/clients or who oversee oversee other health care professionals. Applicants may be awarded only one Hemera fellowship each year.

Fellowship awards are based upon the availability of funding at any particular time. Applicants may be awarded only one Hemera fellowship each year.

Fellowships for Full-Time Artists

Thanks to the generosity of the Hemera Foundation, Southern Dharma is pleased to offer registration funding support to full-time artists—visual artists, performing artists, writers, and multi-disciplinary artists—whose professions directly relate to their artmaking practice. Qualifying individuals include those who teach their artistic discipline, whether privately or with an organization, or in any type of school.

Fellowship awards are based upon the availability of funding at any particular time. Applicants may be awarded only one Hemera fellowship each year.

People who have never attended a retreat longer than a weekend may be awarded full registration funding through Hemera's Tending Space Fellowships for Artists (TSF) program. Applicants with prior retreat experience (people who have previously attended a meditation retreat longer than a weekend) may be awarded 50% registration funding plus additional funding on the basis of financial need.

Fellowship awards may be applied to retreat registration fees, but not to teacher dana, travel expenses, or voluntary contributions to the retreat center.
